You’ve got your usual insipid 1930’s action hero and jejune love interest pitted against a predictably more compelling villain, Count Zaroff.

Leslie Banks and the filmmakers make good useJohn B.noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8796371.post-41011429860027291012010-03-17T19:33:11.419-07:002010-03-17T19:33:11.419-07:00I really like your review. I think you make the film seem far more enticing than it actually is. Banks is lots of fun as Zaroff but his Russian is absolutely terrible, which made it hard for me to take him seriously (in the Trophy Room, for example, Z. tells his servants 'Lay him on the bench,' referring to the dead brother Trowbridge; but it sounds so garbled and, dare I say, retarded, that it diminishes the ferocity of his character).Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8796371.post-72615499517333459502007-10-20T16:44:00.000-07:002007-10-20T16:44:00.000-07:00"As you can see, he's that most dreaded of America..."As you can see, he's that most dreaded of American villains: the European Aristocrat."

Nice! I've had this movie on the brain recently, actually, since I just saw Zodiac, which kind of makes it a plot point that this is a story not a lot of people know (and hence, incriminates Arthur Lee Miller). In fact, I counted only one reference to it being a story at all; much of the time you would think it only existed as a rarely-seen film from the 30s. I just watched Rules of the Game, and now I know why that bugs me. It's because the interesting part of the most dangerous game was the suggestion that the Marquis ' disturbing behavior is a reflection of humanity, not a quirk--we're all incriminated.
